What in the world?….

When learning a language a lot of students start memorizing scripts: How to make a hotel reservation, order a pizza, book a plane, say hello…

The list of ’10 sentence sequences’ can be endless.

But there is an enemy lurking in the darkness: What happens if your interlocutor decides to go off script?

Is it the end of the world? Does this mean your language learning efforts are futile?

I call this phenomenon ‘The Uncertainty’, and the more we advance in our learning process, the better we are at handling it.
We can start figuring out the recurrent patterns that make a language, we learn to read between the lines, we identify the changes. We are not beaten: we understand and interact in a natural way.
Learn the script, and then go rogue.
